EV Charger Installation
EV Charger Inspection and Compliance Check.
What an EV Charger Inspection and Compliance Check Actually Involves
An inspection isn't a quick glance at the charger unit. It's a methodical, hands-on check of everything from the cable entry point through to the wall socket or hardwired connection, the dedicated circuit, the switchboard wiring, and the charger's internal operation.
Here's what we physically work through on site:
- Visual inspection of the charger enclosure, mounting, and cable management for damage, UV degradation, or water ingress
- Insulation resistance testing on the supply cabling using a calibrated megohmmeter
- Earth continuity and polarity checks at the charger terminals
- RCD (residual current device) trip-time testing on the dedicated circuit breaker
- Verification of circuit protection sizing against the charger's rated load and AS/NZS 3000 requirements
- Thermal imaging or load test where equipment allows, to spot any connections running warm under load
- Review of the original installation against current wiring rules and any manufacturer specifications
- Documentation of findings, remediation items (if any), and a compliance certificate if the installation passes
If the installation was done a few years ago, or by a previous owner, there may be no paperwork at all. Part of what we do is reconstruct the compliance record so you have something concrete to show an insurer or property buyer.
When a Carseldine Homeowner Needs This Service
A few situations come up regularly across the Carseldine and Boondall area.
You bought the house with a charger already fitted. No certificate, no installer details, no idea if it was done correctly. That's a common scenario in suburbs like Albany Creek and Bald Hills where EV uptake started early among owner-builders and early adopters who didn't always use licensed electricians.
Your insurer is asking for proof. Some home and contents policies are now requesting documentation that any EV charger installation meets Australian standards. Without a compliance certificate, you may have a gap in your cover.
The charger has been playing up. Intermittent faults, trips on the RCD, slow charging speeds that weren't there before, or the unit getting noticeably warm are all signs something may be wrong with the installation rather than the charger itself.
You're planning a solar integration or switchboard upgrade. Before we connect a solar system to your existing charger or upgrade your board, we need to know the charger circuit is solid. An inspection first prevents surprises mid-job.
It's been three or more years since installation. There's no fixed legal requirement for periodic inspection of residential EV chargers, but as a rule of thumb, the wiring environment in an open carport or garage in the Brisbane climate (UV, humidity, and the occasional downpour) can age connections faster than you'd expect in an air-conditioned room.
What It Typically Costs in Brisbane
An EV charger inspection and compliance check in the Brisbane north and Moreton Bay fringe area typically runs $250 to $550 depending on a handful of factors.
What moves the price up:
- Access difficulty. A charger in a finished garage with a tidy switchboard nearby is straightforward. A charger in a basement, a strata carpark (more on that below), or fed by a long conduit run through the roof cavity takes longer.
- Thermal imaging. Not every job needs it, but if the charger has been running faults or the wiring is older, we'll recommend it. That adds roughly $80 to $150.
- Remediation work. If the inspection finds non-compliant wiring, loose terminals, or undersized protection, that's a separate quote to fix. We won't roll it into the inspection price without telling you first.
- Certificate processing. The compliance certificate and any required notification to Energex is included in our standard inspection quote. There are no hidden admin fees on top.
What's not included in a standard quote: any replacement of the charger unit itself, new conduit or cabling if required, or switchboard modifications. We'll identify those as separate line items so you can decide what to proceed with.
How to Tell If This Is the Right Service for Your Property
If you already have a charger installed and want to know it's safe and properly documented, this is the right service. You don't need a full reinstallation. You need someone to check what's there and sign off on it (or tell you honestly what needs fixing).
If you're starting from scratch with no charger at all, our Home EV Charger Installation service is the place to start.
If your charger works fine but you want to add solar charging capability, the inspection is often a sensible first step before the Solar and EV Charger Integration work begins.
A Straight Word on Qualifications and Safety
EV charger inspections must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor. In Queensland, that means a Contractor Licence issued by the Electrical Safety Office. Anyone offering a "quick check" without that licence cannot legally issue a compliance certificate, and their assessment has no standing with your insurer or a future property buyer.
We hold the appropriate Queensland electrical contractor licence. We carry public liability insurance. If you'd like to see those credentials before booking, just ask.
The compliance certificate we issue references AS/NZS 3000:2018 (the Australian wiring rules) and any relevant manufacturer installation requirements. It's a document you can file, share, and rely on.
If you've had a charger installed by someone you're not sure about, or you've moved into a property where the charger history is unclear, it's worth getting this checked before your next long trip leaves you with a fault and no documentation. Give us a call and we can talk through what's involved for your specific setup in Carseldine or the surrounding suburbs.
